EMERGENCY SURVIVAL GUIDE

In remembrance of James Kim
Thousands of Americans die from exposure each year. This guide was started in remembrance of a fellow techie, James Kim. With knowledge, even with the minimal provisions, a man can survive for weeks if not months out in the open.

GOAL:
  • A free, simple, 30 page printable emergency survival manual in layman.
  • Entirely based on legitimate sources, primarily the US military field manual, FM 21-76 and the updated FM 30.

COMPLETION TIMELINE:
  • Most articles (for North American climates) complete by December, 20th 2001
  • Proofread for accuracy
  • Finalize "Beta" version by January, 1st 2002

OTHER NOTES:

  • A Mirror will be made available shortly at survivalguide.pbwiki.com
  • A lot of the information posted by ShrimpFactor will be picked from the US miltary field manual, FM 21-76, SURVIVAL.
  • A pdf copy is available at http://www.equipped.com/fm21-76.htm http://www.basegear.com/fm2176.html
  • The manual is more of a refresher so detailed instructions will be added!

EDITING NOTES:

  • Add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_skills, condense unnecessary portions
  • Add food to eat in North America, berries, plants, and other easily access-able materials
  • Add a list of DO NOT DO's. Add photos similar to airplane safety guide.
  • Make a system of points to survival, items that increase the chance success
  • Add provisions if a car is available (keys to cut, what can be burned for fire, how to conserve electricity and gas).
  • Direction finding skills (moss, sun rise and sun down, etc)
  • When water is needed where to get some!

1) Sources are from reliable sources, at least edits by me, others will be edited out. The point is, if you're not a survivalist, try not to edit. If you do anyway, someone else will come along and delete it.

As for now the best most reliable source is the tried and true US Army Survival Guide, a copy of which is here: http://www.equipped.com/fm3-0570.htm and is actually easily printable as is. It needs some modifications but in general, most of the survival tips can be pulled off with little but the clothing on your back and are generally easy to carry out in desperate situations.

2) Yes, thousands of Americans do indeed die from situations similar to James Kim. http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm, add up the different statistics, death from prolonged exposure to cold environments, etc. Those are numbers for 2003. Since 2005 there has been thousands thanks to the likes of Katrina, Flooding, etc. Thousands of Americans also go missing every year. In fact 3,000 die every day of different reasons. Just because thousands feels like a big number, doesn't mean it isn't reality.

What are your qualifications for writing, or even compiling valid information, on survival or emergency preparedness? I note that your introduction includes the claim that "thousands" of people die each year in the US from exposure. Anyone who is versed in survival knows that statement is patently false.
In order to put together a reliable and useful guide, one has to know what techniques and gear are appropriate, and which will be totally useless or worse in an emergency. Putting together something that someone may rely upon to save their lives is a serious undertaking. If you are not already trained and experienced in survival, you should probably rethink this project. Misinformation or outdated info, practices which you have not personally verified, techniques you have not personally put to the test can lead to a disaster.
